Settling In

It has been a month since we closed on the property. We were unable to complete our move until the end of May though, due to the fact that Matthew had to work for three weeks straight without more than a day or two off. Fortunately, once we were able to get busy packing and moving, things happened pretty quickly. The day we rented a moving truck and moved the majority of our stuff, we had several friends from church and from Matthew's job helping us load and unload the truck. It would have taken much longer without them; we definitely appreciate their help. The day after we officially moved into the house, we acquired a new dog. He is a hound mix named Bubba. I'll let Matthew talk about the dog and post pictures of him later.

We are still surrounded by packed boxes everywhere you look, so it may he a while before we're able to post regular updates. We're anxious to get started with various projects though. We have several large patches of rhubarb, so one of my first projects after we're settled in will be to make rhubarb pies and jellies.

Our five year old daughter keeps telling us that we need more animals, specifically chickens and horses. We will most likely get chickens this summer, but the horses will have to wait. I think we're all starting to get excited about this new homesteading venture. Now we just need a fence around the property so we can keep our animals in and the wild ones out. We'll probably get a goat or two once the gate is complete. I'm looking forward to have fresh eggs and milk every day. I just hope the dogs won't harass the other animals; Titus, the bear dog mix has already gotten himself in trouble with a mother moose and her twins who frequent our property. He lives to harass the wildlife. I'll post pictures of the moose later.

My posts will most likely continue to be infrequent at least until we get Internet access at the house. For now I'm posting from my iPhone, but my cell service out here is sketchy at best.

We Closed Today!

As you can tell by the title, we finally closed on our property today. We closed just before 5pm. As soon as we got home, we packed up the dogs and some snacks and headed out to the house. It was a great feeling to be able to walk around the property - as the owners - for the first time.

Resurrection Day

It has been nearly two weeks since I last posted an update on our progress with the purchase of our house. Quite frankly, I haven't had the heart to. Anything I would have said would have been rather negative...more so than normal.

While I will briefly update the status of our closing, that isn't really what this post is about. As I write this, it is Saturday night (the 23rd), the night before Resurrection Day, more commonly known as "Easter". Tomorrow is also my 26th birthday.

Hoops and Headaches...

For those of you who have been following this blog for the past month and a half, I have shocking news. Closing has been delayed again. I realize that has been just about the only thing I've ever had to say on this blog, but hopefully that will change someday soon.

At least the update didn't say something along the lines of "We won't be able to buy the house at all now...", like I was afraid I was going to have to say earlier today.

The Saga Continues...

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, our closing date has been pushed back again. Shocking, I know. I'm sure you're beginning to think this whole house buying story is just a big hoax. I'm beginning to feel that way too.

April Fools Day...

As my previous post indicated the probability of this, our closing was indeed delayed once again. Most recently we were supposed to close on March 18, but now we are looking at April 1, or sooner (according to the realtor; we'll see about the "or sooner" part).

Puppy Fever

For a long time we have both wanted a dog. Not only for our enjoyment, but also for our children. I consider animal ownership and husbandry to be a vital part of life. When God created man he made him to be a caretaker of the plants and animals. To till and cultivate the ground and care for the animals. When we do this we are fulfilling a part of what God has created us to do and we bring glory to Him.

More Delays...

The closing on the property was supposed to happen sometime between March 15 and March 18. Since that is now less than a week away, it's only natural that something else would happen to delay closing yet again.

Buying our Homestead

For as long as I've known my husband, it has been his dream to have his own homestead. He always wanted a large piece of property, but eventually he came to terms with buying what we could afford; a fixer-upper on a 5 acre parcel. It hasn't always been my dream to homestead, but the idea has begun to grow on me. Some days I'm excited about the prospect of that sort of life, and other days I'm overwhelmed by it.
